OpenAFS 1.8.0 was released in April 2018, and in the intervening time the efforts of the OpenAFS community have come to focus on the 1.8 series. This change in focus is highlighted by noting that the last three 1.6-series releases have been security releases, the latest non-security release was 1.6.22.4 in 2018, and the latest feature release was 1.6.22 in 2017. The OpenAFS project now considers 1.8 superior in terms of stability and reliability for all scenarios.
Effective immediately, the 1.6 series will only receive security updates.
We are thrilled to announce that the OpenAFS project has been accepted as a
mentoring organization for Google Summer of Code (GSoC) 2025! This is a
fantastic opportunity for us to engage with talented students and contribute to
the growth and development of OpenAFS.
Google Summer of Code is a global program that offers students stipends to
write code for open-source projects. It's a win-win situation: students gain
valuable real-world experience, and OpenAFS benefits from fresh perspectives
and contributions.
